How do we bring the EU closer to the citizens and solve the democratic problems that exist today?
EU scepticism has long been widespread in Sweden and is largely based on the lack of participation in decision-making in Brussels. How can we increase citizens' involvement in European politics? How can further democratisation reduce EUroscepticism? Are European parties the future of the EU?
Utökad information om evenemangetThe lack of knowledge and lack of space for the EU in the Swedish media is one reason for Euroscepticism. The lack of democratic representation within the Union is also a reason for Brussels' remoteness for many Swedish citizens. Since 1976, the voting rules for the EU-Parliament have remained the same, even though the Union has changed significantly since then. We explore how reforms of direct representation of EU citizens in its parliament could be the future of a more democratic Europe.
