Seeing red – access to comprehensive sexuality education in narrow democratic spaces
Sexuality education is a right embodied in international treaties and conventions, but it remains contested and youth suffer the consequences. How can we ensure access in narrow democratic spaces? What are examples of good practice?
Utökad information om evenemangetAccess to comprehensive sexuality education is necessary to ensure that children and youth – a diverse group with various needs – are fully empowered to participate in society. It also ensures the enjoyment of interconnected rights such as education, economic empowerment and enabling participation in civil society, making it pivotal for democracy. Opposition comes from governments, NGOs to institutions motivated by interpretations of religion, culture or sovereignty. Faith leaders have power. They can influence access and play a crucial role in contextualizing interventions. Mobilizing innovative partnerships and methods are needed to fill the global gap in a context of growing conservatism, polarization, shrinking spaces and roll-back on human rights.
