Youth – the untapped resource in Somalia’s peace process?
Youth participation in society is key to sustainable peace, according to the UN. In Somalia, 80 percent of the population is under the age of 35. The vast majority lacking social, economic and political influence. What is the role of youth in the work for peace, security and development in Somalia?

The harsh conditions make it difficult to look optimistically to the future. A new global study proposes several measures to increase youth participation in the work for peace and security. 4,200 youths from 150 countries contributed to the study. In Somalia, the UN has appointed a special adviser for youth, peace and security. Various projects for increased democratic representation and participation are also being carried out in Somalia. Moreover, the private sector in the country receives international support for the creation of new businesses. Among the supporters are young, entrepreneurial Somalis living abroad, doing their best to support a peaceful development and to create jobs in their home country.
